Someone recently asked us the following question about anti-static wrist bands:
I’m preparing to assemble my PC and have been looking into anti-static wrist bands to prevent any potential electrostatic discharge.
Whilst researching the topic, there appears to be a variety of differing opinions regarding the correct method. They range from:
- Method 1: Attach the anti-static wrist band to your wrist, and connect it to a metallic part of your case.
- Method 2: Do method 1, and then connect the PSU to your case. Then connect the PSU to the wall with it turned off (both on the PSU and wall socket).
- Method 3: Do method 1, and then connect the PSU to your case. Then, leave the PSU unplugged from the wall.
Which of these methods are correct? If they are all incorrect, or could be better, please let me know.
Method 1 would be sufficient, and is what we recommend.
Method 2 slightly increases the safety for your PC parts by grounding yourself better, but introduces the remote chance to electrocute yourself if things go horribly wrong. Not worth it!
Method 3 is no more effective than Method 1.
However, anti-static wrist bands are not absolutely necessary for building a PC. Modern PC parts are quite resistant to electrostatic discharge. Many people assemble their PCs without using them, and experience no problems. As long as you are not shuffling on a carpet every few minutes while assembling a PC, you should be fine! Just touch the metal part of the case frequently.
Another method some people use to reduce risk of static is to build their PC while running a humidifier in the room. Some extreme PC builders in dry regions (who apparently don’t own humidifiers) even assemble their PCs in their kitchen while boiling water to humidify the air. However, none of this is absolutely necessary.
So, here’s the official Logical Increments recommendations for anti-static wrist straps:
- You do not absolutely need an anti-static wrist strap. Occasionally touching a metal part of your case will keep you grounded enough for most scenarios.
- If you want to get an anti-static wrist strap for the additional peace of mind, that is great. We can recommend this cheap Rosewill strap as effective.
- If you get an anti-static strap, attach it to your wrist, and then connect the strap to a metallic part of your case.
